Supplement Packages

I cannot tell you how many times I have consulted with a patient that takes too many supplements. They also purchase their supplements from unreliable sources and do not feel better.

It is important to note that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and can sometimes cause harm. Also, there is no way of knowing if the ingredients are accurate. I recently had a patient who had liver disease and was taking a supplement from an online source claiming improvement. This patient had worsening liver enzymes. I looked at the ingredients and discovered an ingredient that could cause liver damage in certain populations which was the case. Now, that is not to say that this supplement may not have been beneficial for another ailment, but how would you know?

Supplements, in the face of disease, should be handled by providers who are experienced in understanding ingredients and have access to reliable sources. In such, an integrative/functional provider should have a thorough understanding of individual ingredients and unwarranted interactions.

A detailed health history should also accompany a discussion of what supplements should be added to a regimen. For instance, there are different types of Magnesium, Probiotics, etc., that can improve health outcomes based on symptoms.

Supplement packages offered by licensed providers many times are not available online as they are medical grade and the ingredients have been studied. In other words, we know what the nutraceutical company says is in the capsule is definitely in the capsule.

During this time of COVID-19 and with the change in the weather, it is important to take necessary supplements to boost your immune system as well as achieve optimal health.
